Course Details:

Fall 2011 NOTE: Course runs from August 25th 2011 – December 8th 2011

Course Description:

Web Site Development. 3 hours. This course is designed to meet the needs of librarians / information professionals in creating interactive web tools.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • identify current trends and technologies related to web design
  • create a multi-mode standards-compliant web-based information resource (a web site)
  • understand usability and accessibility issues as they relate to information organization and retrieval

Course Philosophy:

In reality, web design is a creative, messy, frustrating, and fun effort involving lots of planning and lots of coding that is meant to be done in small groups.

Generally the goal of this course is to create a knowledge base from a set of experiences centered around designing, deploying, and maintaining a moderately complicated set of web applications. Specifically, when appropriate, an effort will be made to offer these experiences in the domain of library and information science as a whole.

Mainly, learning to create the sorts of leading-edge web applications used in library systems is the overall goal.

Assessment:

There will be in-class and online assignments, in-class and online discussions, individual project work, group project work, and exam work. Online-only coursework will mean groups are dependent on the members to pull together and get work done on time.

All assignments will be given a point value. Grades are assigned based on points earned as a percentage of all possible points.

  • A: 90% or higher
  • B: 80% – 89%
  • C: 70% – 79%
  • D: 60% – 69%
  • F: < 60%

Assignments will be turned in via FTP to the assigned web folder or posted via the web in some other prescribed manner. The Webdesign Assignments page will be updated throughout the course.

Semester Project Ideas:
Create a website or web resource that serves a specific set of functions related to a particular area of library and information science.
E.G.
Create a website for a children’s library department with a rating system
Summer Reading Registration interactive tools
Volunteer Opportunity forum(s)

Create a school library website with feedback tools
Collection Information (including collection development)
Research Tools and advice
Online resources (databases) integrated into one tool
Readers’ Advisory or customer/patron reviews

Create a promotional website for an information science professional using web technologies (perhaps selling services such as indexing and abstracting)

Create a searchable information resource for a medical library or law library
Journals and Articles
Reference Services

Create a “portal” related to some specific field

Students with Special Needs:
